Kids Kitchen

OK, I have decided to start this blog with something a bit special.
My wife and I recently upgraded “scored” a new T.V unit and T.V so we decided to make the old unit into something useful. Here is a great example of upcycling furniture that you may have around the house to give it a second life. In this case “A Kids Kitchen”.

The first thing we did was take the unit outside, strip it down and give it a light sand. Then we chose an undercoat/primer and got to work. The glass door had to go, which we replaced with some 12mm board for the fridge/freezer doors. All up the hinges, screws, small sheet of fly wire, mosaic tiles and 2 sheets of 4mm board for the back cost us about $30. The stove top knobs, sink spout and tap, we found on a verge collection. The hotplates we made from yoghurt tub lids painted black. We designed it so the stove and sink taps can be turned to make it more real for the kids.

Once we got home I cut all the bits to size and painted up everything and left it to dry. We chose to use paints we already had that match our walls and skirting boards so it all blends in with our house. The cooking accessories and the wood spice racks that we used as book shelves are all from Ikea. The window (picture frame) and small spice rack were bargains from the local swap mart, about $1 each.
All up it took us about 10- 12 hours from start to finish.

We are pretty happy with the results and so are the kids. It was our first attempt at anything like this so we didn’t know what to expect, but me being a bit of a perfectionist and my wife being very creative we ended up with a “Win”.
Just goes to show you what you can do with some spare time and things you find J

Thanks for reading, more posts soon on my next project/find

  1. Looks great - I'm hoping to find a TV cabinet to do exactly the same closer to Christmas for my little guy. I've seen a couple of similar kitchen posts using old TV cabinets and yours is one of the nicest. Love the idea of bookshelves on the side - great to display cook books :)
